PORTHKERRY PARK CIRCULAR WALK

SUNDAY 7th OCTOBER

Porthkerry Country Park is a beautiful area close to the seaside town of Barry consisting of woodland and meadows within a sheltered valley leading to a pebbled beach and spectacular cliffs. Our 5 mile walk starts at the far end of the park before heading along coastal paths, then skirts the edge of the town and back into the country. Mostly easy walking but there are a series of steep steps known as the Golden Stairs and some short muddy stretches after rain. Notable points of interest along our route are a Victorian Viaduct, remains of a Roman Villa, the Marine Lake shaped as a Welsh Harp, fine sea views from Cold Knap Point (an island up to the 17th century which has Bronze Age burials) and past the19th century, Grade 2 listed Old Watchtower.
