CASTLE-UPON-ALUN WALK (Vale of Glamorgan)

SUNDAY 25th MARCH Walk

Description: From the pretty village of St Brides Major, this 5 mile circular route focuses mainly around the picturesque hamlet of Castle-Upon-Alun. The terrain and views vary widely from heath-land, fields, a ford crossing, stepping stones, country lanes, an ancient stone 'clapper bridge', woodland, an imposing railway arch and an active railway line (an unavoidable part of this Heritage Trail route - please heed the warning signs). A highlight of the walk will be Coed Y Bwl Reserve, a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) renowned for its estimated 250,000 wild native daffodils in Spring.

Start Point: Car Park at St Brides Major (next to village store and opposite Fox & Hounds), Ewenny Rd, CF32 0SA

Time: 9.15am meet for 9.30 start

Duration: 5 miles / 2.5 hrs (approx)

Terrain: Fields( muddy in places), heath-land, riverside paths, country lanes, active railway line (heed warnings!), woodland, stepping stones

Kit: comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing; sturdy waterproof walking boots; drink and snack; walking poles (optional)

Charities: Marie Curie and Wildlife Trust of South Wales Suggested donation: £5 .00 - £10.00

Other Information: Free Parking; not very dog-friendly due to awkward stiles and presence of livestock; nearby refreshment opportunities at the Fox & Hounds or Farmers Arms in St Brides; toilet facilities linked to refreshment points only. Should you wish to extend your visit to this lovely area then places of local interest, all within a mile or two of our meeting point, include the beautiful Heritage Coastline, Dunraven Gardens, Ogmore Castle, Ewenny Priory and some good cafes, pubs and restaurants.
