Our goal is to promote walking as a means of wellbeing for women
Sunday , 11th December 2016
Hi all, Here are the details of our December walk (with amended travel & time details 08/12/2016)
Sunday 11th December
Caerphilly Mountain Walk
with optional visit to Caerphilly Castle and/or the town's Christmas Market
This is a moderately challenging walk with a continuous ascent to the top of Caerphilly Mountain (271 metres/889 ft). However, from its summit, the views over the valley and beyond can be wonderful. From the trig point our walk will continue a short distance to the Mountain Snack Bar where we can enjoy a brief refreshment/loo stop before descending to the town centre and its historic13th Century Castle (second only to Windsor in size). From here you may wish to explore the Castle which will be hosting festive activities with a medieval theme (£5.50 entrance fee) and/or experience the sights, sounds and smells of the town's annual Christmas Market (free of charge) with craft stalls, farmer's market, food & drink, music & entertainment before taking the ten minute stroll back to your parked cars and home.
Start point & directions: Caerphilly Station Park and Ride, CF83 1JU. PLEASE NOTE: this is the P&R beside the town's bus & railway station and NOT the one at nearby Aber Station. One way system is in operation so, when driving through the town centre (with Castle and Tourist Info Centre on your right) head up Castle St and take the left-hand turn (opposite the Library) onto Van Rd. Follow the P&R signs from here (2 roundabouts).*NEW INFO: due to the Medieval Fayre please beware of possible diversions*
Time: 8.45 meet for 9.00am start (*this is earlier than previosly stated due to expected Xmas traffic*)
Duration: 4.5 miles / 2.5 hours approx
Terrain: Some pavement walking but mostly mountain paths and, depending on weather, possible muddy conditions can be expected. There are no stiles or livestock on this walk so it would be suitable for dogs (the Castle also welcomes dogs on leads).
Kit: comfortable weather-appropriate clothing (possible windy conditions on top of the mountain), walking boots/walking trainers, walking poles, drink/snack
Charity: Velindre Fundraising http://www.velindrefundraising.com/ Suggested donation: £10
Other info: Parking is free. The Mountain cafe (our half way point) has outside seating areas (some sheltered) so you may like to bring your own flask and snack. Otherwise hot beverages and food (of the hot dog or beef burger variety) are available inside. There are toilet facilities at the Mountain Cafe and at the Tourist Info Centre opposite the Castle
