Porthkerry Country Park is a beautiful area close to the seaside town of Barry consisting of woodland and meadowland within a sheltered valley leading to a pebbled beach and spectacular cliffs. The 5 mile walk starts at the far end of the park before skirting the edge of the town and then back into the country. Mostly easy walking but there are a series of steep steps at the start (known as the Golden Stairs) and some short muddy stretches after rain. Noteable points of interest along the walk are the site of a Roman Villa, the Marine Lake shaped as a Welsh Harp, fine sea views from Cold Knap Point (which was an island up to the 17th century and has Bronze Age burials) and the19th century, Grade 2 listed Old Watchtower.
