TREVITHICK TRAMWAY & RIVER TAFF TRAIL
SUNDAY 6th SEPTEMBER
(7 Mile Figure-of-Eight Walk from Abercynon)

This scenic, mainly rural walk traces the historic Trevithick Tramway route, setting for the world's first locomotive journey, and features the River Taff as our constant companion along the way.
The first half of the walk mostly features the old flat tram route from Abercynon to PontyGwaith with a couple of riverside path diversions.

At approximately our halfway point we can enjoy a short stop (15-20 mins) for refreshments at Pontygwaith Farm. This private residence is part of the National Gardens Scheme (NGS) which opens its gardens for charity and provides tea/coffee facilities for a small donation (tea & cake £2). After our welcome break we'll continue forward to the beautiful steeply-arched Pont-Y-Gwaith bridge, a Grade 2 listed structure dating from the 16th century when a small ironworks existed here (Pont-Y-Gwaith translates as 'bridge-to-work' or '-ironworks') ...
After crossing the old bridge we'll gradually ascend until we reach a rocky outcrop with delightful panoramic views over the valleys.
From here we'll then steadily descend via country lanes with lovely scenic aspects before rejoining the Tramway Trail and returning to Abercynon
